Experiencing or witnessing violence can significantly impact the way we see the world. Our research helps to reduce victimization and increase treatment options for those impacted by violence, while influencing policy and practice related to violence exposure.
The Begun Center serves as a research and evaluation partner to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office for the Sexual Assault Kit project. Lead by Daniel Flannery, PhD and Rachel Lovell, PhD, the research team coded a random sample of 243 sexual assaults and provided valuable information to the CCPO through five SAK reports. The Begun Center serves as the evaluation partner for the Cuyahoga County Defending Childhood Initiative (DCI). Evaluation activities include identification of appropriate assessment instruments, analysis of screening and pre/post test data for youth receiving trauma-informed care, evaluation of training sessions held for the child-serving agencies in the area, and possible assessment of the effectiveness of a community awareness campaign. The Begun Center serves as the research and evaluation partner to Cuyahoga County and the Domestic Violence Center for the Department of Justice funded Domestic Violence Homicide Prevention(DVHP) Initiative . We work in partnership to reduce domestic violence homicides by effectively identifying potential victims and monitoring high-risk offenders. The DVHP Initiative is modeled after programs in Massachusetts and Maryland, where the use of coordinated teams of law enforcement, prosecutors, health professionals and victims’ services significantly reduced the domestic violence homicide rate. The Begun Center serves as a research and evaluation partner to the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation for the Ohio Campaign for Hope Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative. This initiative is a three-year youth suicide prevention campaign funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
